[2018-13-18] "Flotilla 95 is a 12-year veteran of safe boating in the waters of Marco Island and to the north and south. Folklore, or even legend now, has it that Isadore Goldberg was stopped by a Coast Guard vessel in early 1967 and cited for a series of boating violations which could have cost him more than $200. Interested in the inspection and respectful of the compassion shown by the Coast Guardsmen, Goldberg called Robert Plecity, then Commander of Flotilla 93 in Naples (and still active as Information Systems Officer of Division 9) for assistance. Out of their conversation grew a program to launch a Flotilla on Marco Island, then beginning to grow into a semblance of community. Plecity became the "godfather" of Flotilla 95, monitoring a Basic Qualification Course for a dozen Marco Islanders with several other Flotilla 93 members as instructors. Goldberg became the first Flotilla Commander and remained active until he left the island several years ago. Flotilla 95 was chartered on 30 April 1967. The intervening years have been good - some better than others - and through good and difficult periods the Flotilla has stood ready to search for those lost, rescue those found, and care for those in need on the sea or the backwaters. While search and rescue has been the major endeavor, boating safety and boating education have been the other two keystones of the activities of Flotilla 95. Boating safety is reinforced by the Flotilla's Courtesy Vessel Examination program. More than 700 boats are examined each year by Vessel Examiners of Flotilla 95 for the basic necessities of safety on the waters. Boats meeting Auxiliary standards are granted a decal, green this year, indicating superior safety standards of the owners. Boating Safety and Seamanship, a 13-lesson course in the fundamentals of boat handling, is presented twice a year by the Flotilla. Qualified instructors are presented in the lecture program, which is followed by an examination and the presentation of certificates of completion. Many who are graduated from this course have become valuable members of the Auxiliary. The unique activity of the Flotilla has been the labor of one man, assisted from time to time by other Auxiliarists privileged to be invited to join him. The man is Leonard Ascher. His activity has been the charting of the headwaters and backwaters of the Marco area, researching with the help of area oldtimers the names of islands, waters, bays, creeks, channels and landmarks, and seeking out the courses in his own craft and by his own craft. The result is that persons lost at least know where they are lost. He has prepared charts of these areas and along the course has been accorded national recognition. Some 60 Auxiliarists serve Marco and the Gulf Coast. They muster 40 vessels from backwater size to long-range Gulf search boats. They are able seamen ready to serve. To them the Coast Guard motto, Semper Paratus, is one they live by day by day and feel privileged to do so." |
