Notes	Mary Augusta Johnson (1862-1919) and Charles Louis Olds (1869-1945), two Doctors of Medicine from Philadelphia, married in 1894. They shared an interest in homeopathy and practiced in Philadelphia until about 1902, when Louis moved the family to Florida. Along with their three young daughters, Orida (b. 1896), Saloma (b. 1899), and Rosalie (b. 1901), the Olds settled in a two-story wooden house along the Marco River, just southeast of Marco. When they arrived, the Olds were the only physicians within a 25-mile radius. They hoped to practice medicine year-round, but found lower-than-expected demand because most people living in the area were relatively healthy. In order to sustain their family of five, the Olds ventured into horticulture. They grew fruit crops such as mango, avocado, guava, orange, grapefruit, lemon, and lime, and vegetables such as pepper and tomato. They crated whatever was in season and shipped it to markets in Key West and Fort Myers. The Olds' home-grown produce provided them with a regular supply of food and income. Louis later became Justice of the Peace, preacher, and coroner at Marco, while Mary homeschooled the girls, taught music, and tended the home. In 1916, Louis left his family at Marco to open an office in Ft. Myers, possibly due to financial concerns. Mary died unexpectedly in 1919, Louis having never returned home for more than a visit. The Olds girls, 23, 20, and 17 years old at the time, were forced to fend for themselves.
