Notes	The Mackles earned a sterling reputation as community developers from two previous ventures: the Mackle Company (1945-1954) and the General Development Corporation (1954-1962). Under the Mackles' leadership, GDC became a leading homebuilder in the United States. Their successful development at Key Biscayne (near Miami, Florida) in the early 1950's proved to be a model for the thriving island community they envisioned at Marco Island. The Mackles first visited Marco Island in 1962 after receiving a letter of interest from Barron Collier, Jr., son of advertising mogul and real estate magnate Barron G. Collier. The Colliers had owned most of Marco Island since 1922, but plans for its development stalled since the elder Collier's passing in 1939. The Mackles, along with architect James Vensel and sales executive Neil Bahr, made the three-hour drive from Miami to tour the island. The picturesque crescent-shaped beach and spectacular vistas from atop Indian Hill immediately convinced the Mackles that Marco Island should be their next - and most ambitious - project.
