Notes |
James Harvey Doxsee (1876-1963) first visited Marco in 1910 at the invitation of Capt. William D. Collier. The Doxsee family had been in the clam business since the 1860s, with factories in New York and North Carolina. By 1910, clam beds in those areas had been overharvested. Doxsee took notice of E.S. Burnham's success at Caxambas and agreed to build his own factory at Marco. In 1911, J. H. Doxsee and Sons opened Marco Island's second clam factory on land provided by Collier. Doxsee's clam factory was larger than the factory at Caxambas and described as "well equipped with the most modern and up-to-date machinery known to the industry." Workers were capable of processing up to 1,800 bushels in one shift. Even with two canneries on the island, the demand for clams was so great that orders often fell 500 to 600 bushels short of fulfillment. At its peak, the Doxsee Clam Factory employed 75 to 100 people, attracting many new families to Marco. Marco Island's clamming industry gradually declined in the 1930s and 1940s. The seemingly infinite clam beds became smaller, less abundant, and ultimately unprofitable. Overharvesting was likely a major contributor to their decline, but environmental factors may have also played a role. The factory closed in 1947 and Marco's economy fell into a depression.
