Marco Islander, Spring 1969; p. 12 "A Fishing Guide To Collier County", p. 14 Tommie Camilla Stephens (1888 - 1950) moved to Caxambas with her family when she was 13 years old. Her parents, Allen Thomas Stephens (1864 - 1943) and Annie DeWilla Collins Stephens (1869 - 1942), were from Cordele, Georgia. In March 1901, Frank Green offered the Stephens and their five children passage to Caxambas in exchange for seasonal help around his sweet potato farm. At Caxambas, Tommie caught the eye of James Barfield, who by 1904 was erecting buildings in anticipation of housing the new clam factory's workers. Barfield asked Annie Stephens to run the boarding house, which became known as the Stephens Hotel. James and Tommie married two years later, on July 31, 1906. Together they raised three daughters, Elsie (b. 1908), Elva (b. 1909), and Ava (b. 1911) and later adopted Tommie's niece, Kappy Stephens (b. 1917). |
